Summer Festival #Fashion

One thing that my husband and I love to do in the summer is go to the various festivals and outdoor concerts that our city hosts in July and August.

This is the perfect venue to try out something a little out of the box when it comes to your wardrobe.

Summer Festival

Tiered tanks in bold colors
Striped shorts with structured pockets
Tall gladiator sandals
Wrap bracelets
Feather charms

I love this look for a variety of reasons. First, it uses pattern in an unexpected way. When I started wearing my tribal print shorts by Kristine Cook Designs last summer, I was super self conscious about all of that pattern and visual interest on my rear end. The truth is, it distracts the eye and creates an illusion.

The cobalt tank is beautiful and flowy, the perfect cut to hide the hips!

Accessories wise, wrap bracelets from local arts festivals, and necklaces with interesting charms are great accessories for the Summer. Pick pieces that you love and wear them with pride!

Go bold this summer by mixing neutrals with bold colors and patterns!

Postnatal Summer Fashion #pregnancy #postnatal

When I had our first son, it was mid June. It wasn't super crazy hot yet, but the warm weather was definitely on its way. I learned very quickly that soft flowy fabrics, a good pair of sandals and simple accessories will become your best friend.

Postnatal Summer Fashion

Dresses were my favorite when I was in that first postnatal phase after having Owen, and they are this time around as well. Look for empire waisted, soft fabrics that don't cling to your tummy. Bonus points if you can find dresses with detail like the ruched neckline of the one above. A little detail can add just enough visual interest to make even the simplest summer dress special.

Gladiator sandals are still my favorite type of footwear for summer, and unless you're dealing with postnatal edema and swelling, they'll likely become yours too.

For accessories, think big floppy beach hat, structured fedora, or open weave cuff and long necklace like the ones pictured above.

Ultimately, you want to be comfortable, but feel human again!

Trendy Beach Cover-ups #fashion #summer

Summer is in full swing, and if you're headed to the beach this weekend, a cover-up is likely in your beach bag or on your shopping list.

Trendy Beach Cover-ups

If you have a basic swimsuit, you can get funky with your cover-up. Consider trendy patterns and details like eyelets, chevron, quatrefoil, tribal prints and color blocking.

My favorite of the cover-ups featured above is definitely the bold blue tube style dress with delicate embroidery. While definitely a splurge, it's beautiful and makes for a great transitional piece when you leave the sand and head for lunch or dinner with your friends.

Coming in a close second is the grey silk chiffon tie front cover-up. I just love the flowy kimono style sleeves. It's more casual than the blue cover-up but it's so lovely!!

How do you cover up at the beach?

Summer #BBQ Hostess Essentials

Playing hostess to family and friends this year with a big backyard bar-b-que? Here are a few things to make your hostess duties a cinch, and make you look fabulous this summer!

Summer BBQ Hostess

When I think about playing hostess to a summer bbq, I think about making my guests feel at ease and relaxed. After all, it's summer!

Bring out the blankets to sit on the lawn if you have limited table seating, as well as chic plastic or melamine plates and drinkware.

Line the paths with citronella candles to keep bugs at bay {a huge thing for me...they devour me!} and place lanterns along the porch, deck and anywhere that your guests will be sitting.

Pick up a cute condiment tray like this one from Williams Sonoma. I always cringe when I have to put out the bottles and jars from the fridge and wish they could look a little this caddy is perfect!

And what will you wear?? Well a pretty sundress and wedge heels are perfect. It's summery but not too fancy, girly yet laid back.

Above all, have fun! Bring out the washer toss games and bean bags, water sprinklers for the kids, and sparklers for night time!

Swimwear for Summer 2014 #swim #fashion #bathingsuits

The bane of every woman's existence is shopping for a bra or for a swimsuit. This year, I want to fill you with confidence to rock and amazing suit, be it one piece or two!

Summer Swimsuit Collection 2014

If you're a one piece lover, here are three awesome options.

The white and orange scalloped bodice suit is by Top Shop, and is a steal for a beautiful one piece at $72. It is very much retro glam, yet cover any body flaws you may think you have.

The turquoise cut out suit by Adidas is a more sporty, yet fashion forward look. At $100, it is still very reasonable for a swim suit.

The red suit at the bottom is most definitely the sexy one piece, and is definitely a splurge at $475.

For two pieces, I personally love ones with interesting straps and color combinations.

The two black suits are a great spin on the traditional binki. The one shoulder is a little more sporty, yet has a grecian feel. It retails at $350, but I found it on Polyvore for $175. The second option, the multi strap triangle, retails for $290, but I found it on Polyvore for $150!

The pastel option at the top is a beautiful take on the bandeau bikini, and is a splurge as well at $400. Yes...$400. I honestly chose it because I thought it was pretty!

No matter which suit you choose this summer, rock it. Feel confident in it and keep in mind that every other woman out there is thinking the same thing.

I look too fat
It shows too much of my tummy
My legs look like tree trunks
I'll just keep my tank top on

Own your body. Love your body.

Happy summer!

Cutout Tops for Summer 2014 #fashion #trends

Unless you're living under a rock, you've noticed that alot of cut out tops and dresses on the red carpet.

So it's only natural to think that cut out tops will be at front in centre of clothing store merchandising. Here are a few styles that you can expect to see.

Cutout Tops for Summer

If you have abs, it's a great season to show them off. Crop lops with side, centre and back cut outs paired with high waisted, voluminous circle skirt, or a pair of crop pants and heeled sandals.

The two longer tops, the black and orange options, are great if you are a little more body conscious. They bring the emphasis and eye to the neckline, and would be great paired with crop pants or even jeans.

Who's brave enough to try this trend this summer??

Summer Skirt Trends for 2014 #trends #fashion #summer

The perfect bottom for summer is a skirt. Maxi, midi, mini...all of them are perfectly appropriate for the warm summer months and have so much possibility to be dressed up or down!

Summer Skirts

For skirts this summer, it's all in the details.

Lace overlays
Crochet hems
Geometric color blocking
Polka dots

Have fun with your skirts this season. Pair them with basic tanks and gladiator sandals for day, or glittery tanks and wedge heels, with lots of layered necklaces.

Hair..think boho beach waves and braids.

Make this summer magical!

Spring to Summer Dresses Collection #fashion

And finally, a collection of sweet dresses that are appropriate for both Spring and Summer.

Spring to Summer Dresses 2014

You know the rules...tights and a light cardigan for Spring, awesome wedge heels and lighter toned accessories for Summer!

My favourite dress from the collection above is the ice blue one on the lower left (Forever New $44). It has such beautiful details on the bodice with the eyelet fabric, and then the skirt is soft, flowy and feminine. For Spring, I would pair it with a charcoal or plum sweater, tights and flats. For Summer, wedge heels and a long side braid or loosely swept hair.

Which one is your favorite?

One Dress, Two Seasons #fashion

Take one $80 dress and make it work in two seasons. That is the challenge that I set out for myself on my editorial calendar, and I think I made it work in two very beautiful ways!

Spring to Summer Fashion 2014

On the left we have our Spring look. A beautiful nude dress with a sash detail paired with a short cinched arm structured bolero cardigan, patterned charcoal polka dot tights, and suede pumps. Add in a berry toned clutch and you have a beautiful outfit for a networking event, or even a date night!

Take that same dress, and lighten up the accessories and you have a perfectly balanced outfit for a summer wedding, brunch, baby or bridal shower...really so many events.

If you have a great base piece, like the nude dress above, there is alot that you can do with it to make it last throughout the seasons. This piece could even stretch through the fall with thicker tights, booties and a jacket!
