SWH4T$: Studio Makeover

It's finally ready...the virtual tour of my new studio! I figured that it would make a great post for SWH4T$ since I upcycled some old furniture, created my desk, and created my own typography art!

DIY Desk

The desk was so incredibly easy to make!

You'll need:
2 shelving units (mine are Martha Stewart Home collection from RONA- $40 each)
piece of MDF ($25 for a 4'x8' piece - 2 free cuts at RONA! I had mine cut 4'x2'ish)
6 bins for the cubbies ($10 each at RONA)

Put your shelving units together

Paint your piece of MDF whatever colour you want to suit your room

Put MDF board on top of the shelving units when dry, and voila! DIY desk complete!

Total project cost: $165 - which is pretty cheap considering the cost of furniture, and it's completely unique! Mine stands about 3'ish high, so I dont need a chair in my studio, which is great for my posture! I also have 3 pieces of MDF leftover, which will make great coffee table tops, colouring tables for the kiddo or even just pieces of art!

I already had one of the units for the desk, which saved us $40 of materials cost. Add in the paint, and you're right around $140 for an entire new room!

The bookcase and mailing centre unit were my Husband's when he was a child; thankfully the inlaws  held onto them and I was able to repurpose them!

Love the typography? You can download it for free!

Fabulous Finds Friday: Wallpapered Filing Cabinet

One thing that I want to be sure to do this year, is keep really great records.

Yes, I have Quickbooks for all things electronic and financial...but I also need somewhere for all of my receipts, client notes, design sheets and drawings.

This is a brilliant idea if you have an old dingy filing cabinet at home, that just needs a little TLC

I'm hoping to find a really great chevron wallpaper to keep with my new brand and clean look. If you have any wallpaper suggestions, leave me a comment! I'd love to see them!

This definitely will make keeping tidy client and financial files much easier!

Have a great weekend!

Fabulous Finds Friday: DIY Desk...with storage!

Right now, since we're in between houses and are bunking at the inlaws for a few weeks while we house hunt, my work space is rather nonexistant.

My old workspace was that of a plastic 4' collapsible table.

How I yearn for a proper workspace...with storage underneath for the bins of paint, stacks of paper and other doo-dads that clutter up my creative space.

This one...pretty darn perfect

I already have a unit that is 2x3, so I could possibly just get another, with 3 more bins, and the board for the top...It'd be more narrow, but that would be allright!

Or I could just get the 3x3 units and board, and keep the 2x3 unit for storage...either way, pretty amazing!

Happy weekend!

Fabulous Finds Friday: Shabby Chic Cork Boards

I have a ratty old cork board that I've tried to spruce up with some black spray paint...and it's just sort of...lacking some inspiration.

It's the place that I pin thank-you notes from happy customers...calendars and order deadlines...hang the first ornament that started this whole crazy world of Sweet Stella's.

But...it's ugly. It's just a standard cork board, and I painted the frame black at one point, I think for our wedding seating chart. It's old, and dingy and needs...life.

How pretty are those?!

My plan for my new studio {again...in the house that we haven't found yet!} is to have the walls be a soft light dove grey, with charcoal and navy accents, much like my logo. Shabby chic white framed cork boards? Heck yes!!

Have a great, and inspired, weekend!

Fabulous Finds Friday: Glitter Shakers

I've been searching high and low on Pinterest, designing ever square inch of our new home {which we haven't found yet, but that's besides the point...}

One obvious room that I'm focusing on is my design studio. I've been looking for everything from amazing office chairs, unique storage ideas, distressed desks and how to repurpose items that I already have {cheap and cheerful!}

Here's one that I've found, and definitely will be implementing with some great shakers from the dollar store!

Incredibly smart, and they look super chic too!

Have a Fabulous Friday!

Talk-To-Me Tuesday: Photography Studio

I was recently asked by Laina from Hanlon Lain Photography to help design her indoor studio, a lovely space that she is setting up in her gorgeous farmhouse (I'm seriously in love with her home!).

Off I went to Pinterest in search of inspiration, organization and unique ideas to help her make this space her own.

Some of my favourite ideas are

Backdrops hung on the ceiling - a brilliant use of space! You could also do this in a closet to further maximize the space that you have!

I love the colourful thrifted chairs - what great props! The funky wagon is also pretty amazing, and I know my little guy would love something like that! Having a variety of things, in one space, but making them make sense is key!

This is my favourite idea for her space. A rolling bench...a prop in and of itself, doubles as storage, and a client seating area. it can be out in the open, or it can be put in a closet. Genius!

I have some other ideas up my sleeve and I cannot wait to get started on helping her revamp this space, as well as a little nook just outside of it that we can make into a really fabulous client waiting area, consultation area and additional photography space. Window bench, anyone? I think so!

Thankful Thursday: Coffee Filters

Aside from everything going on the the Emmy's, I've been off in la-la land dreaming about our master bedroom and my studio.

Yes, I know that I just redid my studio, but I don't feel as though it's quite complete yet.

I created a treasury on Etsy for both the Master and my Studio and will be undertaking a few projects over the next few weeks.

We moved into this house when I was pregnant with our son, and that was a year and a half ago! The only room that we've done is Owen's, and it turned out exactly as I envisioned.

I guess you could say that I sort of feel like we're living in someone elses home. The walls are nearly all tan, aside from my brilliant red bathroom...they're all boring and need some life.

Today, I'm thankful for these...

Coffee filter covered pendant lamps

Absolutely beautiful! And...it just so happens that we have a tonne of coffee filters in our kitchen since getting out Tassimo machine.

Now...my method is going to be different, and I won't be hanging them from the ceiling. I plan to cover our Grono lamps from Ikea in the coffee filters, which first will be dyed (colour pending decision!), and varnish them for protection.

A soft, yet masculine, touch that I think my husband will appreciate rather than ruffles and frills hanging from a pendant.

And of course...a how-to for an upcoming Tuesday!

Thankful Thursday: ReOrganization

I know that some readers have long been waiting for this post, so here goes.
Today, I am thankful for...

...storage systems
...glass jars
...labelled bins
...faux leather marker holders
...a space to call my own

The complete Sweet Stella's set-up

Mailing central on the window bench...glass jars to be filled with buttons for upcoming projects

Even my waste-basket is coordinated

A little note on the side to remind me that my Dad is proud of me

Martha Stewart meets JetMax...perfection

A place for paint...
...papers and projects

I absolutely love having ribbons on display! They are so colourful!

I absolutely adore my new studio. It was a long time coming, and I finally feel like this is a space where I can be me. I can pour my all into projects, test out new products and techniques, and create some really beautiful items for you all.

I hope it inspires you to create a space for you, that you can breathe in!
