Setting Intentions in the Fall's my absolute favorite time of the year, and not just because it means that my birthday is around the corner.

Apple cider
Warm socks
Crisp air
Brightly coloured leaves

It means change and the start of something new, all over again. There are cool mornings, warm afternoons and fireflies at night.

This month, set the intention for change.

Imagine the life that you so badly desire. What does it look like? Where are you standing? What are you wearing?

Lead with intention, be open to change, and know that there is a constant flow. The leaves on the summer trees change colors in the fall, so why can't we? Why do we have to stay stuck in the same place, day after day?

The answer is that we don't. But we do because we choose to, or because we are afraid of the alternative.

Be less afraid.
Set the intention for change.

Monthly Intentions...A State of Inner Calm

A big part of being a doula is remaining calm...

being calm for our clients in the event of precipitous or hard labour
being calm for ourselves so as to process the various experiences we have

Being calm is much easier said than done, but we have to set the intention every day and reset ourselves to make it happen.

This month, set out your energy intention to be peaceful. Conduct yourself with a state of inner calm.

This can be achieved through meditation, or simply breathing in the peace, and breathing out the discord. In for the count of 8, out for the count of 8.

Keep it even and balanced and do this for a few minutes, preferably with your eyes closed.

How did you feel after? I'm betting you were able to achieve an inner state of calm!

Living with Intention

I find so often as moms we get wrapped up in who needs to be chauffered where at what time or, in the case of new moms with brand new babes at home, we live in a world of surviving (which is totally fine and a topic for another post this month). We turn on the auto pilot and do to just get by.

What if we changed the conversation and started doing things with intent?

While you might not know where you are headed at all times (I sure don't) you probably have some distinct feeling...a need to be where you are, doing what you're doing.

This is intent.

When we stop moving just to move, doing just to do, thinking just to think, talking just to talk...we live with intent.

Do you know where you are headed? Are you headed there with determination of heart and an open mind?

March Intentions

Have you harnessed the energy that you got flowing last month by setting intentions? Did you find they were fulfilled? Did your cup runneth over?

Maybe it's time to get back to basics when it comes to setting your intentions for March. Here's a quick and easy exercise to help pave your path.

What I love about this particular intention exercise, is the reminder at the end.

You are loved
You are enough

Once you've marinated on what you are going to give up, what you will embrace, remember to honour the process. Take some time to print out the graphic above. Fill it out and be present with the process of standing up and sharing yourself with those around you.

You are loved
You are enough

Setting Monthly Intentions

One thing that I have learned over the past two years of meditative practice is that when we set an intention, with our whole heart and entire being, often that intention is met and that need is fulfilled.

Every month, right here in this moment, I want you to take pause.
Be Still
Be Present

What is it that your heart craves?

Is there an element to your life that you sincerely wish could be better? Set an intention for what you want, what you crave.

If it helps to have a visual of your intention, write it down and put the piece of paper in a jar. Then at the end of the year, reflect on all of them and see which ones were fulfilled. Even when you reflect on the ones that didn't come to fruition, you may notice that they weren't really what you needed and an intention that your heart set all on its own edged its way forward.

Do this at the start of each and every month, and take note of how your heart feels when you make them.

Hold onto that energy and go be amazing.

Word of the Year: Try

My friend Stephanie at A Grande Life is doing her Word of the Year again, and I found that last year it really helped me keep focus on what was truly important to me.

Last year, my word was Grow. I wanted to grow as a person. I wanted to grow the time spent with my family. I wanted to grow my commitment to health and set some big running goals.

In general, I am really happy with how much I grew. I had no idea that my pregnancy and delivery would be so amazing, and in turn would lead me to growing a new business as a birth and postpartum doula. It's been an incredible journey, and I am really excited about my word for 2015.

In 2015, I want to try.

I want to try to run a half marathon (or two or three or four)
I want to try to help as many new and new-again parents find their groove
I want to try to remain calm when faced with stressful situations
I want to try to be as humble and thankful as possible
I want to try to set a good example for my children
I want to try and let go some control

What will your word be for 2015?
