Purpose by Shannon Moyer-Szemenyei at Urban Gallery, #Toronto #art

I write this with an intense amount of nervous anticipation. In just two days, I will be at Urban Gallery in Toronto, Ontario for the opening reception of my art collection Purpose.

It began as a very abstract idea. 18 paintings exploring the theme of Purpose.

What is our purpose? What are we meant to do here while on earth? It turned into something really really spectacular and got deeper and deeper with each new painting that unfolded.
There is a method {and a madness} to each of the pieces, and to say that I have sat back in awe of some of them, and there are a few that I really, really, really don't want to let go of would be an understatement.

I hope to see you out at Urban Gallery for the opening reception, and if I am a ball of nerves...I apologize! I've poured my heart and soul into this collection, and it's like watching your baby take their first step; you're filled to the brim with excitement and pride for them, afraid that they will fall and get hurt, but ultimately know that it's all a part of the growing process and journey.

I can't wait to see what purpose others find in these pieces!

The Purpose behind Purpose

So many have asked me why did you title this exhibition Purpose?

Well...for a few reasons, but namely what I've written below in my exhibition statement.

Pretty deep?

My intention was to make you sit back, take pause and think. There are 18 pieces in all, with a nineteenth that is permanently in my own studio.

My own purpose.

I found mine. I wonder how many will find theirs in April!

Gallery Sneak Peek

You've been keeping up to date with the happenings of Purpose for a few months now on Instagram, so I thought it was time that I gave a sneak peek to my blog readers who haven't traveled over to the Instagram waters to see what I'm up to.

Here's just a sample of one of the paintings that you will see at Urban Gallery in April 2014!

I know...only one photo!? Sorry kids - there is just so much richness in this collection.

Next week, I'll be sharing my bio page from the exhibition so you can see the symbolism behind Purpose. It's pretty deep, and certainly is going to make you think!

Exhibition Announcement!

If you've been following me on Instagram and Facebook, you know that this Spring is going to be a very exciting time for my artistic career. I am thrilled to be having a solo exhibition, my first since 2006, at a chic gallery in Toronto, Ontario.

Urban Gallery is located in the distillery district of Toronto, a really cool, hip and artsy type community. Their space is absolutely gorgeous, and I cannot wait to fill it with my Purpose collection.

My collection, which will be shown for the entire month of April, is centered around the notion of Purpose.

What is our purpose here? To live? Breathe? Die? Bring life into the world? Inspire? Destroy? Each of the 18 (or so) pieces will explore this theme, and leave the ultimate decision up for interpretation.

The pieces that I have finished so far are stunning. I haven't ever created a cohesive collection quite like this. Each piece has a splash of purple, blue or red, then is accented by a metallic or two. As light catches the drips, rolls,  and cracks in the paint, movement is found.

I am so excited to share this exhibition with you in a few months, and will update you monthly until April about the planning phases!!

Vacation Inspiration: Dr. Suess Trees

Since we are actually in sunny Florida this month, I figured that I would write a few posts about the awesome inspiration that I get to experience by changing from the frigid cold climate where my studio is {SouthWestern Ontario} and coming down to the sunny {and warm} south.

One of my most favourite spots on the entire resort is my inlaws patio. It overlooks a pond and these trees that stand way up above the others.

We call them Dr. Suess trees...don't they look like something that Sam I Am would bounce around on? Maybe something that Thing 1 and Thing 2 would jump from branch to branch and jump down into the pond?

No?

Maybe it's just my crazy artist brain, but they're pretty fantastic and you really should see them at sunset. They're just gorgeous.

What do they inspire? Well...paintings of course, but abstract interpretation of these whimsical trees. I can picture a whole series of 18 paintings to be shown in a gallery...

Sounds like I have some work ahead of me!
